DAR ES SALAAM: THE government has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening the role of Tanzania Standard (Newspapers) limited (TSN) as a key communication platform, ensuring it continues to serve as a vital and reliable source of information for the public.
Speaking during the TSN workers’ council meeting, Deputy Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Information, Culture, Arts and Sports, Mr Methusela Ntonda said the government is committed to strengthen the government owned media company.
Mr Ntonda represented Minister for Information, Culture, Arts and Sports, Prof Palamagamba Kabudi at the council meeting.
TSN, which publishes the Daily News, Sunday News, HabariLEO, and SpotiLeo newspapers, as well as the digital platform Daily News Digital, convened the meeting to address several key issues, including the discussion of proposals s for the upcoming 2025/2026 budget.
“As we all know, TSN is a vital tool for the government, serving as a communication channel between the government and the citizens, as well as among the citizens and their government. Effective communication is essential, especially during this time when citizens need to understand various issues concerning our country,” said Mr Ntonda.
He said that the sixthphase government led by President Samia Suluhu Hassan recognises and highly values the contributions of journalists in the country.
Acknowledging the significant work done by TSN in informing the public, Mr Ntonda said the government continues to create an enabling environment for journalists to carry out their duties without any hindrances.
Mr Ntonda added that in demonstrating the significant role being played by the media outlet in delivering quality and reliable news to the public, a budget of 32bn/- has been allocated for the ongoing construction of a commercial printing factory, as well as for the purchase of modern printing equipment.
Speaking on some challenges that hinder the swift execution of various responsibilities, he urged TSN to turn the challenges into opportunities by offering diverse and innovative ideas for finding solutions rather than resorting to complaints.
Furthermore, he emphasised the importance of unity, accountability, mutual respect and adherence to professional ethics and public service standards among staff members.
He also encouraged employees to work diligently and patriotically by maintaining both the new and existing equipment and resources, ensuring sustainability for the future.
On his part, TSN Board Chairperson, Inspector General of Police (Rtd) Saidi Mwema, expressed his gratitude to President Samia for entrusting him with the responsibility of leading the board.
The former IGP encouraged TSN staff and management to embrace solidarity, urging them to align their efforts with President Samia’s 4Rs philosophy (Resilience, Reform, Reconciliation and Rebuild) in order to advance the organisation.
Earlier, TSN Managing Director, Ms Asha Dachi expressed optimism about transforming the media outlet despite the challenges it faces.
She insisted the importance of leveraging current resources, including the successful transition of consumers to competitive digital platforms, as a way to drive progress.
“It is my belief that these meetings will continue to serve as a catalyst for developing methods and strategies that will enhance the institution’s performance and improve the image of both the company and our society as a whole. After all, our productivity remains crucial to the community,” said Ms Dachi.
